My name is Lisa and I am a teacher and Instructional Coach. I have been teaching for over 10 years with expertise in high-functioning autism spectrum disorder as well as students with dyslexia and dysgraphia. I am a Wilson Certified teacher who works with students in schools as well as private clients.
My educational background started with a B.A. and credential in Elementary Education from Arizona State University. I started teaching at an amazing Title I school in Arizona. My mentor teachers and I quickly realized that I work really well with the most challenging students, and they often became my favorites. When I moved back home to California a few years later, I got a job in special education at a small private school. I started teaching during the day and earned my M.A. in Special Education at night. It was a lot of work, but I'm so proud of myself for finishing it in only a year! I'll be honest... I'm a bit of a nerd! I went stir crazy after finishing my Master's and having so much time on my hands, so I signed up for more classes. I earned my CTEL/CLAD certificate from Stanford University. Their program was wonderful!
Totally non-academic me:
I love soccer! I've played my whole life (well since I was 5, but it sure feels like forever!). My mom and babysitter put me on a team when my kindergarten called and said I wouldn't sit still. My mom believed in productive exhaustion and I thank her for that! I still play on a team that I LOVE. We aren't always the best team, but we are always the team that gets along and has the most fun, (even when we screw up a bit). I've since started CrossFit and have become a chick who weightlifts. Never in a million years did I think that would happen! I love it! It's a great way to burn off the stress of the day!
Found your blog through Honey Bunch. The picture of your cottage school was so interesting! I teach gifted but I believe there are so many strategies that work with all students. I have had many gifted students with Aspergers and they are among my most favorite students. I am happy to be your newest follower!
